Strong progress on merger proposals

 Strong progress on merger proposals

I am delighted to report that significant progress is being made on all fronts regarding our merger discussions with Bolton at Home Limited.

Our respective teams have met and will continue our discussions over the coming months. It’s pleasing to see a strong synergy in our commitment to build more new affordable homes across our communities.

Our focus, as ever, is to continue to deliver high quality services to our residents.

Community fund

Our community fund of a total of £40,000 is now open for bids for 2018/19. We have expanded this fund from £25,000 last year, due to the significant impact we have seen providing grants to a wide range of extremely worthwhile charities. Recently, the fund has supported breakfast clubs and emergency food packs at The Oasis Centre in Gorton.

Arcon has agreed to a longer-term partnership with The Oasis Centre, which provides support services to vulnerable residents, with our community funding helping to enable a dedicated Next Steps Co-ordinator at the Centre, called Val. We will be producing monthly blogs on our website of our partnership with The Oasis Centre, showing Val’s progress.

This year, our Community Fund is open to both residents and charities to bid for funding. We have up to £300 to support a personal or community project. For charities, we have up to £3,000 of funding available; we would like to work with charities which combat homelessness, increase resident employability and well-being.

I would urge you to get your bids in: https://www.arcon.org.uk/community-fund

Housing announcements

Looking back to the Conservative Party Conference, there was a welcome commitment from the Prime Minister to social housing, with £2 billion of further funding to support the affordable housing programme. There was also a recognition of the need to build homes for real ‘social rent’ at a lower cost than those at ‘affordable rent’.

Lifting of LHA borrowing caps

Furthermore, Theresa May announced at the Conference that Local Housing Allowance caps for borrowing for Councils will be scrapped. We have since learnt that caps are due to be lifted, possibly as part of the Budget announcements on October 29. This should assist Councils to overcome restrictions to invest in housing. Hopefully, further opportunities will exist for Arcon to use our development expertise to partner with Councils in our neighbourhoods, further ensuring more new homes are built across our region.

As always, if you have any issues or would like to get involved in our Tenant Scrutiny Committee, please contact our Customer Hub on 0161 214 4120.
